Communications and networks provider UPC has been selected as an official sponsor of the Irish Presidency of the European Union.

Under the terms of the agreement, UPC will provide a 200Mbps broadband service to Dublin Castle, which will host the majority of the official EU and State events during the Irish Presidency.

Ireland’s six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union commenced on January 1, 2013 and will run until the end of June 2013. During this time, Ireland will host many meetings and associated events-the majority of which will take place in Dublin Castle.

"Ireland’s 2013 EU Presidency," said Minister of State for European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton TD, "presents an opportunity for Irish and multinational companies to contribute in ways that effectively support the overall Presidency Programme, supporting our actions to redefine and enhance Ireland’s image abroad as we renew and redevelop our national economic competitiveness."

"It is a very meaningful time for Ireland to host the EU Presidency for six months from January-June 2013," Gavan Smyth, business services director, UPC Ireland. "It provides Ireland with a unique opportunity to showcase the country to our EU partners and a wider international audience."

"UPC is proud to sponsor the Irish Presidency by providing the Government with superfast broadband speeds of 200Mbps over our fibre powered network into Dublin Castle. These speeds are among the highest in Ireland and are representative of the vast improvements Ireland has made in the availability of high speed broadband since we last held the Presidency in 2004.

"Ireland’s strong ranking in global and European broadband league tables is a trend that was identified in the recent UPC Report on Ireland’s Digital Future, undertaken independently by Amárach Research on behalf of UPC which found that Ireland ranked ninth in Europe and 15th globally in terms of averaged measured download speeds.

"In this regard, UPC is delighted to be in a position to work with the Irish Government to showcase the benefits of UPC’s €500m national investment in our next generation fibre network."
