UPC Ireland has posted its first quarter 2013 results, showing a continued overall increase in subscriptions from 988,700 reported in the third quarter of 2012 to 1,012,600 across phone, broadband and TV. Broadband subscriptions were the primary driver of growth following the expansion of fibre connection, on-demand service (currently with over 20 million views) and the Horizon TV app (downloaded 315,700 times) that allows customers to watch TV on tablets, PCs and smartphones.

Other sections of the business showed mixed fortunes. Phone subscriptions were at 254,700, up from 238,000 at the end of 2012, however digital TV subscriptions dipped to 382,300 from 383,200.

UPC has begun offering customers free upgrades to a minimum speed of 50Mb/s, putting its customers ahead of the EU’s Digital Agenda targets of 30Mb/s per household by 2020 and Ireland’s own national broadband plans to enable 40Mb/s for up to 85% of the population by the same time.

Other highlights in the results were the expansion of its triple play business bundles, the installation of 200Mb/s broadband to Dublin Castle and the 100,000 e-safety information packs distributed as part of the company’s continued support of Internet Safety Day.

The decline in interest in phone and TV subscriptions could be put down to a number of factors, not least the rise of the cord-cutting phenomenon, where consumers are forsaking cable TV for the Internet.
