Take a trip with the light fantastic

Audio-visual entrainment is the process by which co-ordinated sound and light schemes can induce particular brainwave patterns to produce Alpha, Beta or Theta wave states which correspond roughly to relaxation, focused attention and dreaming respectively. The phenomenon has long been known and is most recognisable by the almost hypnotic effect of staring at an open fire. However, much study over the decades has yielded a greater understanding of the effect and medical and therapeutic benefits.

The David Pal device is a small control box that connects to a set of stereo headphones and a set of eye glasses that have lights on the inner surface. Various programmes of combined sound and light in pulsating and varied frequencies induce states in the brain similar to those experienced by highly trained meditators. Useful for treating such conditions as Attention Deficit Disorder, Seasonal Affective Disorder, insomnia, and a range of other conditions, the device can bring relaxation and stress relief for anyone without the need for complex meditation techniques that can take years to master.

In one mild session, taking just 15 minutes, Alpha waves are induced. The effect is similar to getting lost in one’s thoughts and dissociating slightly from the world around you. While still aware of external stimuli, they are more easily ignored. The effect is both relaxing and refreshing, allowing you to get on with things as if you’ve had a good nap.

Other programmes can induce a focused state, better than coffee, should a difficult task need particular attention, while the Theta wave programmes can help you drift away to peaceful sleep.

While many may be sceptical, the device simply works on a physiological human response, much in the same way that a mallet on the knee results in a specific reaction. As such, it can be a rewarding addition to conventional medicine or simply a way to sooth those frazzled nerves in today’s hectic world.
