Audio-visual entrainment is the process by which co-ordinated sound and light schemes can induce particular brainwave patterns to produce Alpha, Beta or Theta wave states which correspond roughly to relaxation, focused attention and dreaming respectively. The phenomenon has long been known and is most recognisable by the almost hypnotic effect of staring at an open fire.
