Software piracy watchdog, the Business Software Alliance has revealed the results of its 2004 Global Piracy Study, conducted by research analysts IDC.
It shows that Ireland still has a relatively high rate of piracy at 38%. More alarmingly, this shows an increase of 25% from 2003. Julian McMenamin, chairman of the Business Software Alliance in Ireland commented on the report: “Ireland continues to experience an unacceptable high piracy rate and trails behind the average EU country rate of 35% and the UK rate of 27%.
Kathryn Raleigh, director at technology policy interest group ICT Ireland warned that Ireland host seven out of the 10 major software companies in the world and that it was therefore vital that we reduce piracy rates and respect intellectual property if our software industry is to remain attractive to foreign direct investment.
