The T720i is a sleek addition to the Motorola range, silver in colour and quite compact.
The phone has a ‘flip’ screen, so it easily fits in your pocket, with an LCD screen on the outside of the phone allowing users to see who is ringing you before you pick up the phone.
A large colour display and iconic menu system make navigating the T720i easy enough. The phone is fully customisable; the outer covers can be changed, as can the screen saver, colour scheme and wallpaper on the phone. The T720i also has the latest polyphonic ring tones (for those who care about such things), with new ones available for download from Motorola’s website (www.hellomoto.com).
For added convenience, the phone also includes voice dialling; simply save your voice tags for phonebook entries; when you want to use voice dialling, press the button at the side of the phone and speak.
The T720i uses the latest GPRS technology. A GPRS indicator on the screen shows when you are using the high-speed network — if you have a GPRS SIM inserted in your phone, the indicator will show up onscreen.
A date book allows you to keep track of important appointments, set reminder alarms and set your morning wakeup call.
The T720i combines work and play in equal measures. Java games, such as Moto GP, are included on the handset and others can be downloaded from Motorola’s website. The phone is compliant with MMS; with the camera attachment, multimedia messages can be sent and received. Like most imaging phones, the quality is reasonable — you won’t be enlarging the images and framing them, but it’s good enough to pass on to a colleague on their phone. Just make sure that the image is well lit, otherwise you may leave your workpals wondering exactly what you’re sending them — without the regular flash that usually accompanies cameras, you might find that your images aren’t as good as what you are used to.
Once the browser settings have been entered, users can also browse the Web with the phone — provided they have the correct SIM card.
The T720i has its own hands-free car kit — sold separately — that will look perfectly at home in any car. Ours was fitted by Audio Cellular Installations in Ballymount. Apart from keeping users on the right side of the law when talking and driving, the kit also recharges the phone as it sits in the cradle. If your car radio supports the function, the kit will mute the car radio when a call comes in. The car kit is compatible with all Motorola phones launched from summer 2003.
