Proton may be working on its own privacy-focused Web browser
Proton appears to be further expanding its range of privacy services with its own Web browser. A recent job listing shows that the Swiss technology company is looking for developers for a new browser team that will work on a browser with privacy at its core. It is not yet known when the software will become available.
According to the job listing, the browser should go on to serve millions of users worldwide and become part of Proton’s broader vision for a privacy-friendly Internet.
The company, known for Proton Mail, Proton VPN and Proton Drive, among other services, has not yet released any further details about the project itself.
However, the listing does provide an important clue about the browser’s technical foundation. Proton is seeking developers with experience in building and maintaining browsers based on Chromium, the open-source project on which Google Chrome is also built. Knowledge of the Chromium code and the associated development tools is considered an advantage.
Opting for Chromium would place Proton alongside other well-known browsers that use the same technology, such as Microsoft Edge, Opera, Vivaldi and the privacy-focused browser Brave. Although Chromium is the standard for many modern browsers, it remains striking that Proton seems to be choosing this particular base, given its strong focus on privacy and independence.
