The Xilinx Academic Forum was set up to explore the future use of programmable logic devices in a myriad of electronic systems. The forum announced it would make Xilinx technologies available to students and academics for education and research throughout Ireland.
Speaking in Dublin, the senior director of Xilinx Research Labs and the worldwide Xilinx University Programme, Patrick Lysaght, said: “This represents an impressive commitment which will not go unnoticed by leading research based corporations throughout the world. If the seven-year funding goals of the State are substantially achieved, then this will undoubtedly result in economic benefits for Ireland in the creation of a world class research infrastructure, indigenous research industry growth, spin-off employment creation and additional foreign direct investment. This is an important platform for Ireland’s competitiveness into the future.”
The Xilinx Academic Forum was set up to provide a platform for academia and industry to inform on existing undergraduate and postgraduate research into programmable solutions and on related third level and postgraduate teaching methods.
The forum is comprised of proactive Irish third level academics who use and promote Xilinx reconfigurable logic devices in teaching and research. XAFI will promote sharing of information among members on related teaching programmes (syllabi, training and lab material, equipment, assessment methods and exams). It will also co-ordinate Xilinx-sponsored training for academics and researchers and encourage collaboration with the company to organise design competitions, course development, internships, research projects, guest lectures, and sponsorship.
Xilinx is one of Ireland’s leading foreign direct investment partners. Since establishing its Dublin base in 1995, the company has invested over €125 million in the largest facility operated by the company outside of North America. The company also recently opened a full division of Xilinx Research Laboratories in Ireland.
Xilinx European headquarters is located in Dublin and has responsibility for both hardware and software engineering development, business operations management, IT, design services, finance, legal, marketing and human resources.
