Pivotal, a company accelerating digital transformation for enterprises, is to create 130 jobs and an investment of approximately €100 million in Ireland over the next five years. The Silicon Valley-head-quartered company is partially owned by EMC Corporation and VMware with General Electric becoming an investor in May 2013.

Pivotal’s investment marks a significant commitment to Ireland, which is recognised by the company as one of the world’s most important technology hubs. This expansion, said the company, is also an opportunity to further capitalise on the rapidly expanding talent pool of creative and digital expertise across the region, further expanding its presence in EMEA and supporting the local Irish economy.

Pivotal Labs, a business unit of Pivotal, has been credited with shaping the development culture of Silicon Valley’s most influential and valuable brands. Its agile software development approach brings start-up speeds, predictable software methodology, and iterative product development culture to Ireland’s largest enterprises.

Transforming development
Speaking at the event, Leo Spiegel, senior vice president of corporate development and strategy, Pivotal, said “We believe that transforming how the world builds software will shape the future of the world.”

Spiegel said that the key elements required to develop software in this new world were a modern development platform and a modern cloud platform, which Pivotal provide, primarily in open source form.

“The world is demanding a software-led, intuitive approach for almost everything — to the way we interact with each other as human beings, to the way we interact with organisations and enterprises,” said Robert O’Donovan, CFO, Pivotal.

The investment includes a new Pivotal Labs office in Dublin and the expansion of the company’s operations in Cork; resulting in recruitment for full-time software engineering, technical support, operational and general and administrative roles, mainly over the next 24 months.

“Our decision to invest in Ireland was really about talent,” said O’Donovan. “We looked at Ireland’s ability to attract and retain the best talent — the best of Irish, European and international talent.”

“Secondly, we had a good look at Irish universities and the curricula coming out of Irish universities, but also the graduates, and thought this is a great place for us to settle.”

Dublin tech scene
“The continued rapid development of Dublin’s tech scene makes it the perfect location for further investment by Pivotal,” said Kevin Flanagan, general manager for Ireland, Pivotal. “It is a hotbed of talent, innovation and exciting ideas that we are looking forward to playing a central role within. Pivotal Labs will quickly become a software innovation hub for Dublin’s largest enterprises in all industries and will help transform them into great software companies.”

“We pride ourselves on our education system, which ranks with the best in the world, which we want to keep up there,” said An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD at the event. “That’s why it is really important that companies like Pivotal, will say this is the range of talent and qualifications and specifics we need, because we are small enough to be flexible enough to change top meet those demands before they actually happen.”

Pivotal works with many of the world’s most admired brands such as AllState, BMW, Comcast, GE and Verizon, as well as a deep heritage working with many of the world’s most valuable Internet companies.

IDA Support
The project is supported by the Department for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation through IDA.

“It is fantastic to see Pivotal open another office in Ireland,” said Martin Shanahan, CEO, IDA Ireland. “Pivotal’s decision to establish a software innovation hub for start-ups and enterprise customers in Dublin is a strong endorsement of the city’s established reputation as a tech hub. Pivotal’s new operation in Dublin will provide roles for those with software development and technology backgrounds.”
