Wiki Loves Earth Ireland, a photography competition focused on wildlife and nature, is calling all passionate photographers to showcase the awe-inspiring landscapes and diverse wildlife of the island of Ireland.

The competition aims to celebrate the island’s natural heritage while encouraging photographers to contribute their stunning visuals to the world’s largest free online encyclopaedia, Wikipedia.

Organised by Wikimedia Community Ireland, Wiki Loves Earth Ireland invites photographers of all levels to capture the beauty of Ireland’s protected landscapes, flora, and fauna. The competition not only showcases Ireland’s natural treasures but also contributes to the collective knowledge and understanding of the world’s biodiversity.

Wiki Loves Earth Ireland invites photographers to explore the vast range of natural wonders found across the country, from the many rivers and waterways to our local ancient woodlands, and from the dramatic landscapes of our peatlands to the serene beauty of our many mountains. Participants are encouraged to focus their lenses on a diverse range of subjects, including but not limited to flora, fauna, geological formations, shorelines, and waterways.

“The aim of Wiki Loves Earth Ireland is to inspire everyone to appreciate and protect our natural heritage by celebrating and recording it through photography,” said Rebecca O’Neill, project coordinator of Wikimedia Community Ireland.

“We want to encourage photographers to explore Ireland’s unique ecosystems, celebrate its biodiversity, and contribute to Wikipedia’s vast database of freely available knowledge through imagery.”

The competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers and provides a huge platform to showcase their talents. To participate, photographers upload their photographs to Wikimedia Commons, the media repository for Wikipedia, through our upload button. A panel of local and international judges will evaluate the submissions based on creativity, composition, technical proficiency, and adherence to the contest’s guidelines.

The winners of Wiki Loves Earth Ireland will also be entered into the international competition, with winners from 48 other countries.

The competition opened 1 June and runs through 31 July. The winners will be announced in early September 2023.

Participants are encouraged to review the contest guidelines and rules, which are available on the official Wiki Loves Earth Ireland website www.wikimedia.ie.
