Perfect printer

Life

1 April 2005

Earlier this year, Canon released a new range of printers with a designer twist, called the Pixma range. The IP1500 is one of the new printers, a silver and black offering that won’t look out of place beside the most sleek of systems.

It’s not a case of all style and no substance with this printer; it has a resolution of 4800 by 1200 dpi, using a FINE print head and 2picolitre micro nozzles. This ensures that you get the finest quality prints from the Pixma.

Print speeds will reach up to 18 pages per minute in black and white, and 13ppm in colour. According to Canon, the printer will produce a 4 by 6in photo in under a minute — and the printer performed almost as well as it promised, give or take a few seconds.

You can also produce borderless photos quick smart, so you can get those images framed and on your wall in a matter of minutes. If you want to print web pages, you can use the Easy WebPrint software that comes with the printer. The IP1500 is also pretty quiet while printing, so if you have it in your living room, it won’t disturb any TV watching.

We found this printer performed equally well when printing text or photos. The text was crisp and clear, and printed at high speeds in draft mode. The photos produced by the IP1500 had good colour reproduction, with accurate skin tones. Team this with the speed of printing photos (1.1ppm for a full A4 at standard settings) and you have a useful machine that should find a permanent place in your computer set up.

The printer itself is quite robust; despite its new design it doesn’t sacrifice Canon’s quality. It’s compatible with both Macs and Windows, so there are no issues there. We found it hard to find fault with this inkjet printer.

Consumables and how often you replace them is also a consideration; the Pixma has two ink tanks (one black, one colour) and Canon promises 140 pages at 5 per cent coverage for both colour and back and white. However, these figures will vary depending on how the type of documents you are printing.
