In its annual report for the 2026 financial year, Microsoft has for the first time revealed how much revenue its biggest AI partner OpenAI generates. The figures show that in the past financial year OpenAI accounted for roughly $24.1 billion in revenue for Microsoft. That amounts to over 70% of the company’s total AI revenue, which is estimated at around $34 billion.
The information comes from a mandatory financial disclosure in which Microsoft reports the revenue from its largest customer. Although OpenAI is not mentioned by name, previous agreements between the two companies make it clear that it refers to the developer of ChatGPT.
The figures underline how important OpenAI has become to Microsoft. Since Microsoft’s multibillion investments in OpenAI, a large part of the software company’s AI activities has been driven by demand for Azure cloud capacity from OpenAI. At the same time, Microsoft is working to reduce its dependence by developing its own AI models and entering into partnerships with other parties, such as Anthropic.
Despite this diversification, the annual report shows that OpenAI will, for the time being, remain the biggest driver of Microsoft’s AI revenue. According to the disclosed figures, the partnership generated on average over $2 billion in revenue per month for Microsoft in the 2026 financial year.
