Mystery surrounds cyber criminals’ claim of stolen Revolut dataset
Cyber criminals are offering 75 million datasets of Revolut users for sale on an underground hackers’ forum. According to security researchers, however, there is no evidence that the data actually originate from a hack at the neobank.
The advert appeared on a well-known forum where stolen data are traded. The seller claimed that the file contains personal details of tens of millions of Revolut customers, including names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, home addresses and financial information. There are also said to be scans of identity documents and selfies among the data.
Security company Hudson Rock investigated the claim and concluded that there were no indications that the data were taken directly from Revolut’s systems. It may be a collection of data from previous leaks at other organisations, or information obtained via malware on users’ devices.
Revolut said that it has no indication of a security incident in which its own systems have been compromised. The company says it is investigating the situation and stresses that it takes such reports seriously.
For customers, there is currently no confirmation that their data have actually been leaked. Security experts do, however, advise people to be alert to phishing e-mails and suspicious messages that try to exploit the unrest surrounding the alleged data breach. They also say that using strong, unique passwords and two-step verification remains important.
