Musk accuses Apple of giving OpenAI preferential treatment in App Store rankings
Apple is guilty of an ‘unequivocal violation of antitrust law’ by favoring OpenAI in the App Store’s AI rankings – according to xAI owner Elon Musk.
Last month, xAI launched Grok 4, its latest language model, said to deliver significant improvements over the competition. At the same time, it introduced new features.
Data from App Figures show the Grok app climbed in short order from around 60th to 29th in the App Store rankings. After xAI made Grok 4 free worldwide, the app rose further to No. 5 overall and even to No. 2 in the productivity category.
Despite this rising popularity, Grok couldn’t dethrone OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has topped Apple’s charts for more than a year, almost without interruption. Apple has repeatedly promoted ChatGPT through editorial picks in the App Store and is working with OpenAI on its new Apple Intelligence features, including direct integration with Siri and support for writing tools.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote: “Apple is behaving in such a way that it’s impossible for any AI company other than OpenAI to be #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take legal action immediately.”
It remains unclear exactly what prompted Musk to make this accusation. The coming days will likely provide more clarity about his motives and any potential legal action.
