Mobile karaoke

Just when you thought mobile phones had everything, Sharp and Toshiba have come up with new handsets that can double as portable karaoke machines.

The V602SH and V601T phones can be connected to an external display and play karaoke files that have been downloaded from Japan’s Vodafone Live mobile Internet service.

With a television connection, the words to the song and a simple animation appear on the screen while the melody plays through the speakers. The handset can then be used as the microphone with the singer’s voice also coming out of the television.

Other features are fairly standard for a current Japanese mobile, such as megapixel camera, colour display and support for mobile Internet and Java applets. The Sharp handset is also the first to feature a 2X optical zoom.

Both phones will go on sale in Japan through Vodafone KK: the V602SH in mid-June and the V601T in mid-July. Prices are yet to be decided and they won’t work on foreign networks.
