Samsung introduced a 105″, curved-screen, Ultra High Definition TV at a pre-International CES news event, but the new product was upstaged when movie director Michael Bay walked offstage because of a problem with a teleprompter.
Bay, who is famous for action movies such as the Transformers series, seemed ready to extol the wonders of the new Samsung curved-screen TV. But he had barely started when he stopped awkwardly on a vast, darkened stage and said something was wrong with the script that he was seeing over a teleprompter.
Bay seemed ready to get started again and then stopped and walked offstage saying, “I’m sorry; I’m sorry.”
A Samsung executive later excused his departure, saying it was the result of another live demo gone awry at CES.
Samsung also announced a bendable TV that can be transformed from a flat to a curved screen with the push of a button. Curved screens are being promoted as more immersive, and Samsung said its new model offers consumers a choice of styles.
Samsung sold the most UHD TVs of any vendor in 2013, but the market is expected to grow slowly, according to Consumer Electronics Association economists. Part of the reason is the cost of the devices. Samsung didn’t immediately announce pricing on the sets it introduced Monday. The company will have a line of curved and flat TVs ranging from 50″ to 110″, many of which will be on display at CES later this week.
