Salaries in the IT sector have stabilised during the first half of 2003, according to a new survey. Research carried out by the recruitment company, Rescon IT, indicates that salaries have remained relatively stable this year. The study reveals that the number of IT permanent opportunities rose by 44 per cent in the first quarter of 2003, a sign that the market is recovering. However, the IT contract market has become extremely competitive with the number of contractors who have been ‘in between’ contracts during the past 12 months for a given period, increasing by 26 per cent since last year.

Rescon IT claim that there has been a change in their clients’ recruitment process with soft skills becoming as important as technical expertise. This change is attributed to the number of high calibre candidates currently available. Candidates are also changing their approach to job-hunting with salaries becoming less essential than a good benefits package. Job security and career progression are also seen to be deciding factors for candidates when applying for or accepting a position.

The recruitment company says that software companies appear to be expanding their testing and development teams, which is considered a good indication of an improving market and the release of budget from overseas.
