A recent study from managed services firm Synstar reveals that IT directors in Ireland are more worried about a potential skills shortage than their European colleagues. The survey of 7000 European CIOs and managers found that one in two Irish IT directors are concerned about a deficit in suitably trained professionals. This compares to just two per cent in the UK and eight per cent in Germany.
The findings represent a major turnaround from last year, when some 88 per cent of Irish IT managers said that they were not worried about an IT skills shortage. Ian Byrne, business service manager with Synstar said: ‘The findings are startling and suggest that the technology labour market has recovered in Ireland following the downturn over the last three years.
The results endorse the decision by parents and students to return to science and technology courses, as reflected in the recent CAO applications.’ He added, however, that the local sector could potentially see a temporary skills shortage due to the flight away from IT related courses over the last few years. ‘This lack of skilled IT people makes it particularly difficult for Ireland’s small and medium sized enterprises to manage all their IT infrastructure in-house, since we are likely to see a return to increased upper pressure on salaries and good people being headhunted’.
