US multinational technology corporation Xilinx has named a senior Irish executive as general manager and senior director of a new global development division to be based at the firm’s European headquarters in Dublin.
The appointment of Lionel Barker, says Xilinx, endorses Ireland as a centre for foreign direct investment. The new division will create some of the most advanced semiconductor technologies in the world. Xilinx develops advanced programmable semiconductors (microchips) and employs 3,800 globally, with 400 at its European base in Ireland.
Barker will focus on innovation and engineering specifically for customers, working closely with Xilinx Research Laboratories, which also does high profile research in Dublin.
The new division will help customers to deliver products to market faster, more cost-effectively, and with optimal performance. The firm’s design arm already works closely with many electronics industry leaders to create programmable devices for a wide range of advanced systems. Barker will head up three global design teams, two of which are in North America, with a team also based in Dublin. While over half of the new global division will be based in Dublin, Xilinx would not be drawn on the specific new job numbers that may arise from the development.
The company stressed that the positions involved are high level. They require senior level technical postgraduate qualifications as well as the ability to deal at a research and development level with the company’s global customers. This means the knowledge factor is more important than the number of jobs.
Barker was previously director of engineering for Xilinx Design Services, a position he took up in 2000 following the acquisition by Xilinx of Integral Design, which Barker co-founded in 1995. This emphasis on innovation has seen the company’s Irish operations rise rapidly up the corporate value chain since 1995, when Xilinx arrived here. The Irish facility has consistently broken all performance barriers, attracting further expansion investments, new research operations, senior global roles and management responsibilities which now span Europe, the Middle East ,Africa, India and Asia.
