Iomega are celebrating an anniversary with 25 years in the US and Europe. Marking the anniversary with a number of tours and events world wide, Robert Kennedy, Key Account Manager for OEM, Ireland and South Africa, said ‘25 years is an achievement’.

Looking back to their beginnings with products like the Bernoulli, Robert is keen to point out that they have come a long way. ‘We offer everything from a 1.44Mb floppy drive product up to 1.6Tb storage devices.’

While proud of the now ubiquitous Zip Drive, Iomega are building on their reputation with new products like REV drives and Network Attached Storage (NAS) targeting small to medium sized businesses. ‘The data being stored by small business today is what enterprise stored yesterday’, said Kennedy. ‘We segment our products in B2C with floppy, zip and optical and B2B with REV and NAS.’

REV drives, launched a year ago, use hard drive derived technology to provide a high capacity storage solution to rival tapes systems such as DLT in speed, robustness and reliability.  The motor and the data platter are in the cartridge while the read heads remain in the drive. In this manner, the data transfer rates between computer and REV drive and comparable to hard drive to hard drive rates, while enjoying the robustness of a tape but offering in the region of 1 million Read/Write cycles per media without the need for cleaning.

NAS solutions offered by Iomega run up to 1.6Tb with wireless connectivity and low maintenance. By simply connecting the device to the network, storage capacity can be increased to support creaking mail or file servers. ‘The challenge with Small Business is awareness’ said Kennedy. Iomega want to make users aware that NAS can offer ‘easy addition of storage to a network with low technical overhead’ continued Kennedy.  When challenged on low cost servers offering similar capability, Kennedy pointed out the NAS offers a lower Total Cost of Ownership as there are not the license requirements associated with operating systems. ‘It is a challenge making people aware of the problems NAS can solve for them’ said Kennedy.

An anniversary year is always a proud one for any company and Iomega are celebrating with an eye on the future bringing innovative products to market. ‘Zip is ten years old now’ said Kennedy, ‘with 55 million Zip drives sold.  But we are always looking at new products.’
