Huawei opened its fourth Irish R&D office in Ireland today. The office, located at the IFSC, is expected to create 50 research and development jobs by 2016, bringing the total to 120 Huawei employees working in R&D in Ireland.

The project is supported by the Dept of Jobs through IDA Ireland.

The IFSC centre will be the lead R&D office in Ireland, working in conjunction with Huawei’s other sites in Dublin, Cork and Athlone.

Huawei – which invested €35 million in the Irish economy in 2015 – will expand its STEM and education initiatives through its flagship CSR programme Seeds for the future to support the Dublin facility’s core focus of cloud innovation.

Commenting on the investment, Martin Shanahan, CEO, IDA, said: “Huawei is one of the largest suppliers of mobile telecom equipment globally. The company’s decision to expand its R&D activity here in Ireland is a great endorsement of the country’s highly skilled, well-educated and technologically savvy workforce.”

Zhou Hong, president, European Research Institute at Huawei, said: “Each year, Huawei invests at least 10% of its global revenue in R&D. The opening of our newest Dublin facility highlights our long term dedication to investment and opportunities in Ireland’s technology sector. The facility will tap into Dublin’s growing clusters of cloud and technology businesses, nurturing future talent and providing additional new opportunities for highly skilled professionals.”

Huawei has been operating in Ireland since May 2004, and opened its first research and development centre in Athlone in 2011. The following year it established a customer experience centre in Cork. Huawei recently expanded its investment in Ireland through the acquisition of Amartus last July.
