Photo printing only…
In the consumer space there are hundreds of printers that can do the job for most people. So you need to ask yourself a few questions before you start. Is it going to be a photo printer only? If this is so, then go for a multi-ink tank option. There are many choices among devices which have their colour print inks split into separate ink tanks, six or eight being common. The tank is a container for the ink only and the print head is part of the printer. This can have distinct advantages for printing colour photos as the heads are usually of higher quality and the ink tanks can be cheaper, but you will need more of them.
Document printing dictates…
If your printer will do a bit of document printing too, then you may need a multi-colour ink system that has a large black capacity. Some printers offer colours in a combination of three hues that also have a large black ink cartridge. This means that some document prints can be done without having to replace the colours after every few hundred pages. However the drawback is that by reducing colour production to a combination of three hues can lead to less brilliant colour definition. But it is worth checking these out to see what suits your needs.
Let ‘em cool off…
When you have chosen the printer, rather than just hitting Print, it is prudent to set your printer to draft mode, to save ink, and do some trial prints on plain paper. This will allow you to see any flaws before you use photo paper and lots of ink. Adjust placement, orientation and size to your needs and then set quality to high, select your glossy paper and print your images. Remember though, this is a thermal process for the most part so it pays to leave your images to cool briefly before handling them to avoid nasty finger prints ruining you masterpiece.
