The new Apple CEO John Ternus inherits a company brimming with innovative product ideas, putting him in a position to succeed from day one, according to Apple insider Mark Gurman writing in Bloomberg.

Ternus’ term begins on 1 September, just two weeks before the eagerly awaited launch of the foldable iPhone, a device whose development he personally oversaw. This strategic timing positions Ternus as the face of this groundbreaking product and highlights his expertise in engineering and product development.

The foldable iPhone is on the verge of becoming a game changer for Apple. With a focus on durability, performance, a barely visible crease in the screen and a large horizontal display when unfolded, it meets the demands of discerning customers while tapping into Ternus’s strengths. Initial scarcity due to complex supply chains is likely to fuel demand further, and the hefty price tag is expected to boost Apple’s average selling price and revenue growth, potentially attracting Android users who are already used to foldable devices.

Ternus’s first full quarter as CEO coincides with the lucrative holiday season, a period in which Apple is expected to surpass its previous record for the December quarter. This promising start lays the foundation for a successful term in office.

Beyond the immediate success of the foldable iPhone, Ternus has a much larger pipeline of products waiting in the wings. Over the coming years, Apple is preparing to enter roughly 10 new product categories, overshadowing the three major categories introduced during Tim Cook’s tenure.

Ternus recently shared his vision with employees, stressing that Apple is on the verge of “changing the world” and boasting of the most exciting product pipeline of his career. While these upcoming products may not be as revolutionary as the original iPhone, their sheer scale and rapid development pace are remarkable.

New product categories

The new product categories include a range of innovative concepts. Among them are AI-powered smart home products: a smart home hub that combines a HomePod with a display for controlling the home, a table-top robot with enhanced videoconferencing capabilities, and a privacy-focused security device to compete with Ring and Google Nest.

There are also AI-powered wearable cameras: smart glasses with cameras that capture media and data for AI applications, AI AirPods that use low-resolution cameras to provide contextual information and reminders, and a pendant with a computer vision system that feeds data to the AI and Siri features of an iPhone.

In addition, touchscreen Macs are on the way, starting with a high-end MacBook at the end of 2026 or early 2027, potentially paving the way for touchscreens on other Apple computers. There are augmented reality glasses intended to replace the iPhone by overlaying digital information onto the real-world view. Lastly, there is hype around a possible foldable iPad, a priority for Ternus but potentially a risky experiment.
