Google’s transition from the nine-year-old Google Assistant to the AI assistant Gemini is now almost complete across the company’s entire ecosystem.

The switch has been implemented on partner smartphones such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, and Motorola, as well as on smart TVs, in cars, and on Wear OS smartwatches.

According to a support document, Gemini includes all the same commands as Google Assistant but allows for more natural voice interactions. The company wants Gemini to become a truly comprehensive assistant.

In the future, Google envisions Gemini not just as a personal assistant, but also as one that is proactive and more capable. During its developer conference in May, Google outlined potential future features for Gemini, such as the ability to make phone calls on behalf of users, serve as a homework helper, and even assist in repairing bicycles.

These features are part of Project Astra, a research prototype for a universal AI assistant that will gradually be integrated into Gemini. Google has not yet provided a timeline for these implementations.
