Failure not an option in charity drive

Network services specialist Lan Communications is used to being in the driving seat. However, employees Liam Burke and Declan McCormack took the metaphor literally when they drove for 48 hours with only brief stops for a snooze.

No, they weren’t commuting on the M50. They were driving for charity, and raised EUR*2,000 for Dublin’s Temple Street Children’s Hospital.

The Lan Comm men, each driving a 30-year-old V8 Land-Rover, were among 21 teams taking part in this year’s 4×4 Charity Challenge, which involves off-road and on-road sections.

All went well until one of them broke a half-shaft while fording a river. Burke commented: “We had done a lot of preparation, familiarising ourselves with the mechanics of our vehicles, so were able to make running repairs.”

Despite having to continue using just two-wheel-drive, Team Lan Comm reached the end of the 800km course, aided by Discovery series maps donated by Ordnance Survey Ireland.
