This session outlines current concerns about risks from the uncontrolled use of spreadsheet-based information systems.Real statistics on error rates are presented which will provide IT auditors with evidence when making their case for better control.Good practices are presented for error detection, correction, and prevention. These are appearing in new syllabuses for skills certification.
The session will cover how to assess risk in the context of spreadsheet criticality, and a process of high level and detailed reviews. After completing this session, the participant will be able to:
- Understand the real incidence of spreadsheet errors
- Recommend good practice in spreadsheet development and control
- Assess risk, Scope a test plan, ask penetrating questions, recognize indicators of good practice
- Understand Spreadsheet Management processes and end-user certification standards
- Be aware of software tools for spreadsheet audit efficiency
It will be concluded with a review of software tools on the market to facilitate the audit process.
Speaker: Patrick O’ Beirne
Patrick is Managing Director of Systems Modelling Limited (sysmod.com) since 1981. His current focus is spreadsheet systems modelling and auditing services as well as training and development. He is occasional chair of the European Spreadsheet Risks Interest Group (EuSpRIG), a committee member of SoftTest Ireland, and a Fellow of the Irish Computer Society. He has advised two certification bodies on the content of a syllabus for a new certification in good spreadsheet practices. He is the author of “Spreadsheet Check and Control” (Systems Publishing, 2005, ISBN 190540400X) and the developer of the XLTest spreadsheet auditing Excel addin.
