Things you need to know about developing applications that use barcode scanning (but nobody told you!)
ICS building, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
We often hear from manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, hospitals and other end users that their software can’t scan barcodes. This is often due to a poor understanding of how barcodes work, what useful data they contain and how best to ‘unpack’ that data.
GS1 standard barcodes are structured in a way to allow systems to read as much or as little data as required.
This briefing is aimed at providing useful information that software developers need to be aware of to avoid the common pitfalls to enable efficient processing of contained data, and to avoid system crashes caused by scanning previously unseen barcodes.
The aim of this briefing is to ensure that your systems are future proofed, scaleable and robust when presented with any of the wide array of standard barcodes (GS1/EAN-13, DataBar, ITF14, GS1/EAN-128, Data matrix, QRCode, etc).
The briefing will also cover the different barcode types, some advice on barcode scanner configurations, use of Function 1 character, parsing a barcode and common errors (truncating fixed length fields, invalid check digit on GTIN, omitting function 1 character, invalid date formats and invalid weight formats).

What next for the IT department?
8am -9am
ICS Building
In this masterclass, Dr Joe Peppard will share his latest research where he challenges the fundamental assumptions and practices that frame our thinking about how companies design, position, structure and govern their IT units.
A key finding is that we must reorient their attention away from the ‘IT organisation’ to ‘organising for IT.’ That is, as digital becomes part of the fabric of an enterprise, the challenge for leadership teams is not to build a more digitally savvy IT unit, but to establish the basis for coordinating and integrating the knowledge required for success with technology.
This is particularly difficult as this knowhow is dispersed across the organisation and increasingly into customers and ecosystem partners. It requires a fresh approach and new organizing models.
Drawing on in-depth case studies, Dr Peppard will illustrate how some leading companies are implementing new organising models and highlight what these mean for technology leadership.
Dr Peppard is Principal Research Scientist at MIT Sloan School of Management’s Centre for Information System Research and ICS Fellow.
Free for members and €25 for non-members.

MSc in Software Solutions Architecture application closing date
Primarily online/TU Dublin (Tallaght campus)
Winner of best professional development award in the 2018 Tech Excellence Awards, this exciting part-time programme to give current and potential Software Architects the skills, theory and recognition they need to develop in their role. For the first time candidates can gain a full Masters of Science degree in this specialist area through a mixed learning process with an emphasis on practical application in the workplace.
Most software architects grow or develop into their role with no formal standards, certification or training in the practice of software architecture. They are usually highly skilled, competent and high performers but many express a need for recognition of their role in the form of an accredited academic qualification with opportunities for developing and expanding their skill sets and creating the prospect for long-term progression along their career path. Equally companies are keen to retain these highly skilled employees and develop an Architecture capability pipeline as well as preparing new or prospective software engineers to be successful in an Architect’s role.
Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet analysed these challenges and its Steering Group developed a programme concept based on the outputs of a workshop session in December 2015 with representatives from four member companies, Cisco, IBM, Ericsson and Fidelity. This led to a public tendering process out of which a consortium comprising the Irish Computer Society (ICS), Technological University Dublin (Tallaght Campus) and the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) was appointed to deliver the new MSc in Applied IT Architecture.
Programme Aims
The Programme aims to equip established and aspiring Architects with:- An informed, common, industry-aligned understanding of their role
- A set of frameworks, approaches and tools for executing Architecture tasks
- A knowledge base of current best Architectural practice and experience
- Ability to Communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders
- The capacity to understand technology initiatives from a broad Business Perspective
- Be equipped to make strategic technical decisions
- Obtain internationally certified and validated academic recognition
Programme Outline
The programme will have seven modules including a major research project as follows:- Module 1 – IT Architecture Design
- Module 2 – IT Environment
- Module 3 – Business Technology Strategy
- Module 4 – Human Skills for the IT Architect
- Module 5 – IT Architecture Quality Attributes
- Module 6 – IT Architecture in Practice
- Module 7 – Research Methods
- Research Project / Dissertation
The programme will be delivered part-time over two years with lectures one night per week. Every 3-4 weeks it will be necessary to hold lectures twice in that week.
The programme will start with a three-day workshop which will involve all participants being physically present. This is seen as important to facilitate networking, experience sharing and group learning.
There is a strong awareness of the constraints on architects’ time, particularly time spent off-site. It is expected that lectures will be delivered one evening per week in term time and every 3-4 weeks there may be a requirement to hold lectures twice in that week. There will also be a requirement to attend one on-campus day at the end of each semester.
Lectures will be streamed live from TU Dublin (Tallaght Campus) and will be available for download and offline viewing. The award structure will place greater emphasis on continuous assessment, practical and project work rather than on formal examinations. In fact there are only 2 modules that carry an actual exam.
Prospective participants must either (a) be serving in the role of software architect, or (b) be aspiring to move into such a role. All participants must have substantial experience of IT software and systems development and implementation in team and technical leading roles. They must also have current competence to interact with development teams at a deep technical (i.e. specification and coding) level.
Applicants should have a primary degree (Level 8) in Computer Science or a cognate/science discipline or a degree with a high level of mathematics. Those who do not meet this requirement will be considered on their merits if they can show a particular interest or aptitude for this area of work or if they have industry experience and training which shows evidence that their education and work experience is sufficient to meet the education needs of the programme and recruitment policies of the College.
Participants will become registered students of TU Dublin (Tallaght Campus) and be awarded free membership of IASA.

MSc in DevOps application deadline
Primarily online via TU Dublin (Tallaght Campus)
With most technology organisations moving their delivery platforms to a DevOps approach the shortage of people with cross sectional skills in DevOps is now acute. Developed by industry as a direct response to this need this first-ever Master’s degree in DevOps aims to fill these important talent gaps and give credit, recognition and credibility to technologists working in this field.
The advantages of Development Teams and Operations Teams collaborating to improve the delivery of technology solutions has meant a rapid adoption of DevOps approaches to the Software Development Lifecycle. Closely associated with Lean and Agile concepts in enhancing the delivery of technology solutions, the DevOps approach has impacted very rapidly on the Technology industry.
Most existing DevOps ‘specialists’ grow or develop into their role with no formal standards or certification, and a modicum of training in the actual practice of cross functional DevOps practices. They may already be experienced, highly skilled, competent and high performers in their own field of software development, computing, IT management, or quality assurance but they can lack the knowledge and understanding of the other cross functional disciplines they now find themselves working with daily. Understanding not only the technical, but also the business and human factors at play during the high pressure demands of modern software delivery processes, is essential in the modern discipline of DevOps
There are two phases to the award. Candidates are registered for the full Masters of Science in DevOps Level 9 degree (90 credits) however candidates may opt to exit the programme on successful completion of the first three semesters with 60 credits and receive a Level 9 Postgraduate Diploma in DevOps (60 credits). Please note exit awards are at the discretion of the college and no refund of fees will be due.
The award structure will place greater emphasis on continuous assessment, practical and project work rather than on formal examinations. In fact there are only 2 modules that carry an actual exam.
The aim is that participants will gain a deep understanding of the topics and content covered, and be able to demonstrate this acquired knowledge as proven competence in tests and exercises drawn from practical “real life” DevOps scenarios.
The programme will start with a three-day workshop which will involve all participants being physically present. This is seen as important to facilitate networking, experience sharing and group learning.
Lectures will be streamed live from TU Dublin (Tallaght Campus) i and will be available for download and offline viewing.
Programme Outline:
- Semester 1: Business Technology, Strategy, IT Infrastructure & Automation
- Semester 2: Continuous Software Delivery, Human & Organisational Issues
- Semester 3: Advanced IT Infrastructure for DevOps and DevOps in Practice
- Semester 4: Research Methods, Research Project
The minimum entry requirement for standard entrants to the course is a 2:2 (GPA 2.5 or equivalent), in a Bachelor of Science in Computing (Level 8) or a cognate discipline or equivalent. Candidates not attaining this standard level must achieve an acceptable standard for progression by other means approved by QQI.

ECDPO 7 – Records & Policy Management – Autumn 2019 – Dublin
09:30 – 17:00
With the rapid growth in data storage solutions, many organisations no longer see data retention as a high-cost item. The temptation to retain all things data is so strong and with greater access to technology due to reduced costs, perpetual retention of both manual and electronic data may be perceived as convenient and not necessarily expedient as it involves “a lot work”. But with this comes increased exposure to the risk of data loss, unauthorised access, and ultimately, reputational damage. Retaining data indefinitely without a legal basis or justification can constitute an infringement under GDPR can attract fines.

GDPR comes packaged with requirements that encourage accountability and governance for the protection of personal data for organizations involved in the processing of such. Accountability is now an important and explicit requirement under GDPR. Simply put, accountability requires that organisations process personal data lawfully and accurately in a transparent manner. There must be one or more legitimate reasons why personal data is effectively processed and where appropriate, minimally retained.
