Stylish this machine is, if you happen to be a fan of 70’s sci-fi series Buck Rogers. Rather odd looking at first sight, the aptly-titled Edeq quickly grew on this reviewer with its black and silver trimmings and retro-70’s cubic shape. Beneath its stylish exterior, this model also carries a whole lot of processing power, sporting a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz CPU, 256Mbyte of SD RAM memory, a 40Gbyte hard drive, and a combo CD ROM/DVD ROM/CR RW drive. The latter drive is fitted on the right hand side of the monitor which although of a traditional desktop design, features a 15-in LCD screen much like that of a notebook computer.
The keyboard and mouse are also coloured black and silver and are both wireless, communicating with the computer by radio frequency. At the rear of the machine, connectivity options include three USB ports, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast video transfer, Ethernet for network and broadband access, and LPT and Coms ports for connecting legacy peripherals. Dial-up access is also supported on the left hand side of the box. As extra features, a Web cam is built into the top of the PC and the speakers are also built and the sound is deep and impressive from them, despite the fact that they aren’t freestanding.
The software included on this models was also impressive: with Windows XP Professional installed as the operating system, Roxio Easy CD for CD recording and two 3D games — Jedi Knight 2 Jedi Outcast and Soldier of Fortune II — which, on test, offered a graphics performance that passed with flying colours.
On the keyboard, one-key shortcuts can be configured to quick access to Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Outlook e-mail and volume controls for the CD/DVD player.
