Dublin City University has selected Cinario Enterprise Manager to provide central management of all of the different security systems on its 85-acre campus in Glasnevin in a deal worth €200,000.
The university has signed a two year deal with Cinario that will see the company, which is based in DCU’s Invent Centre (Innovation and Enterprise Centre), develop the full potential of the software. The project aims to roll out over a period of 12 months and will incorporate more than 30 different DCU buildings.
Michael Kelly, acting director of buildings, DCU, said the company had looked at a number of options aimed at integrating all of the university’s diverse intruder detection, access control and CCTV systems into one centralised control but could find one system that could fulfil all of its requirements. A bespoke system was ruled out for a number of reasons, including cost.
Kelly said that one typical problem his organisation faced recently was an intruder alert system installed into the Helix theatre builder by the original contractors was turned out to be unable to ‘talk’ to any other system.
‘Cinario operates as many different alarm systems as you want,’ said Kelly. ‘Training overheads have been reduced since initial implementation of the software and already we can see real benefits in reducing operational risks in DCU’s complex environment through the centralised control this software facilitates,’ said Kelly.
He added that one unique feature of Cinario was the exception management capability, whereby buildings that are not properly and securely shut after the last occupant leaves for the night could be re-secure remotely.
Kelly said that over the next two years, it will work with Cinario to add further security system capabilities through Cinario EM, including the loading of staff and student database information to enhance the security of student and staff ID cards.
