Dark times for white box manufacturers

We live in interesting times for white box manufacturers. Like the poor, they are always with us, but unlike the poor, they appear to be in decline. Figures from IDC show that the share of the worldwide market taken by white box vendors has declined from 44% in 2003 to 37% in 2006 although, as an article on CNET recently pointed out, large numbers of customers continue to choose such machines.

The article went on to suggest that the big problem for white box manufacturers is the growing popularity of notebooks. In this segment, the white box share has fallen from 8.5% in 2003 to 5.6% in 2006 at a time when sales of notebooks have increased to the point where they account for two-thirds of consumer sales. Indeed, one local retailer in Ireland told me the ratio was actually more like 4:1.
