Clie controls TV and DVD

Powered by a Motorola Dragonball VZ 33Mhz processor, the new Clie PEG-T415 has a 320×320 pixel resolution monochrome screen and uses version 4.1 of the Palm operating system.

<p>This latest Clie also features 8Mbyte of DRAM and 4Mbyte of flash memory. In addition to the enhanced infrared port with a 15-foot range for controlling audio and video equipment, it has a USB port in the desktop synching cradle and a Memory Stick port.

In a new development, this handheld will soon be also able to act as a remote control TVs, VCRs and DVD players, using the IR port’s channel changer. This additional functionality depends on a software upgrade which is due to be made available in early 2002.

Sony has also released two new modules for use with Clie handhelds — a camera module for photography and an MP3 music player module. The PEGA-MSC1 Memory Stick Camera Module allows the Clie T415, N760C, and N610C handhelds to take digital photos. The camera plugs into the Memory Stick port. Images can be recorded on Memory Stick or on-board memory. With a maximum resolution of 320 x 240 pixels, image quality is too low for print photos but high enough for sending photos by e-mail or posting them to Websites.

The PEGA-SA10 Audio Adapter reads MP3 audio files stored on Memory Stick media and, unlike previous Sony handhelds, these need not be copy-protected or in proprietary formats, like Microsoft Windows Audio.

The adapter plugs into the serial port located at the base of the T415 and comes with headphones and installation software. These products will be available in Ireland after Christmas and prices for them have yet to be announced.
