The Association of Data Protection Officers (ADPO) has joined the Confederation of European Data Protection Organisations (CEDPO).

ADPO was launched in February 2012 by the Irish Computer Society as a membership organisation for those who are actively working as data protection officers.

Chairman of ADPO, Fintan Swanton said: “We believe that it is essential to enhance the position of the data protection officer. DPOs help to make data protection more effective, to reduce unnecessary administrative burdens, and to create trust. We are eager to be able to join our forces to those of our European colleagues to make things progress at a wider scale.”

Pascale Gelly, vice president of the French AFCDP, said: “Already in September 29 2013, our Austrian, Irish and Polish colleagues had fully endorsed CEDPO’s Declaration calling upon EU Institutions to create incentives to stimulate the appointment of DPOs for a better data protection, which was released on the occasion of the 35th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy in Warsaw. We are therefore enthusiastic that they confirmed their interest in CEDPO’s initiatives as it shows that they also see the DPO as a ‘compass’ to drive the protection of personal data.”

The Association of Data Protection Officers and the Irish Computer Society are holding the National Data Protection Conference on 28 January in Dublin Castle. Confirmed speakers include Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes and lead negotiator on data protection for the European People’s Party (EPP) and former GAA president Seán Kelly.
