Apple will hold its annual iPhone event on Tuesday, 9 September, according to a report today by Re/Code.

If Apple follows 2013’s protocol, it will begin selling the new model or models – dubbed ‘iPhone 6’ to fit within the company’s nomenclature – on Friday, 19 September.

Most observers expect Apple to roll out a larger-screen iPhone next month, one with a display at least 4.7″. measured diagonally. Most leaked components from Asian suppliers – who can’t keep a secret as they manufacture parts and begin assembly in Chinese factories – have been of that size. Some pundits also believe Apple will introduce an iPhone with a 5.5″. screen, although the lack of leaks there bolsters the case that the even bigger device will ship later, perhaps in early 2015.

If Re/Code’s bet accurate, Apple will email invitations to reporters and analysts on 2 September, the day after the Labour Day holiday in the US.

Again, assuming the 9 September day is correct, Apple will start taking pre-orders for the iPhone 6 on 12 September, and iOS 8, the new mobile operating system that Apple revealed at WWDC, should be available on 17 September, two days before the hardware reaches retail, for existing iPhone and iPad owners to download.

Coincidentally, 9 September is Patch Tuesday, Microsoft’s monthly release of security updates.
