Apple has announced that it sold 9 million new iPhones during the launch weekend of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, and claims that more than 200 million iOS devices are now running iOS 7.

In a press release, Apple revealed that it has sold "a record-breaking" 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models within three days of their release on 20 September. The company hasn’t revealed how this figure is divided between iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, though.

Also in the press release, Apple said "more than 200 million iOS devices are now running completely redesigned iOS 7, making it the fastest software upgrade in history".

Prior to the release of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, analysts predicted 5-8 million new iPhone sales for the launch weekend. Last year, Apple sold 5 million iPhone 5 models within the first three days.

The iPhone 5s sold out very quickly, and Apple admitted that "demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply," adding that "many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks."

Apple CEO Tim Cook said: "This is our best iPhone launch yet – more than nine million new iPhones sold – a record for first weekend sales. The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

Additionally, Apple revealed that 11 million unique users in the US have tuned in to iTunes Radio since it launched on 18 September. There’s still no word on when Apple will launch iTunes Radio in Ireland.
