Apple planning radical glass redesign for 20th anniversary of the iPhone in 2027
Despite recent claims by analysts suggesting otherwise, Apple is moving ahead with a radical aesthetic redesign of the iPhone to mark the device’s 20th anniversary in 2027, reports Bloomberg.
Sources close to the project said the upcoming Pro models, internally designated as V73 and V74, will feature a design in which glass dominates. This design consists of glass extending from the front and back into the edges, separated by a metal strip in the middle.
Although Apple’s design team initially pushed for an almost seamless glass construction without metal components, that concept has ultimately been abandoned. Technical obstacles related to bonding the glass panels and the difficulties of mass-producing such a fragile structure led the company to switch to the current hybrid approach.
These developments contradict a recent report by Jefferies analyst Edison Lee, who, based on supply chain data, suggested that the project had been cancelled. This analysis led to a downgrade of Apple’s stock rating, causing the share price to fall by 2.8% on Monday. Insiders, however, insist that the company’s strategic roadmap remains unchanged. Since hardware specifications are typically finalised a year before release, the designs for 2027 are already undergoing extensive testing.
The iPhone remains the main driver of Apple’s financial success. The device accounts for roughly half of total revenue and recently recorded 22% growth. To maintain this trend, the company is preparing several short-term launches. These include a historic shift to a foldable smartphone, as well as the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which will feature significant camera upgrades and a new dark red finish.
Other releases expected in the spring include the standard iPhone 18 and the budget-friendly 18e. In addition, a second generation of the slim iPhone Air is planned, with improved battery performance, a more powerful chip and an extra camera.
Beyond smartphones, Apple is diversifying its portfolio with AI-integrated wearables, including smart glasses and AirPods with cameras. This expanded pipeline of innovations is expected to give a strong boost to incoming CEO John Ternus, who begins his term on 1 September.
