Apple’s latest flagship device, the iPhone 17 Pro, is facing heavy criticism online. Despite promises of a scratch-resistant finish, photos of damaged devices have been surfacing on social media. The dark blue variants, in particular, appear to be especially prone to damage. The hashtag covering this issue has gone viral in China, where the problem is being reported most frequently.

On Weibo, China’s largest social media platform, the hashtag about these quality issues has garnered more than 40 million views. For now, it remains unclear whether the problem is limited to China or is surfacing worldwide.

This isn’t the first time Apple has faced backlash after launching a new iPhone. Complaints about the iPhone 17 Pro revive memories of earlier devices with similar problems. The glossy black iPhone 7 was notorious for being prone to scratches, the ultra-thin iPhone 6 was criticised for bending too easily, and the iPhone 4 experienced antenna problems.

Each generation seems to bring its own headaches – and this time, durability is once again a sore spot.

Curiously, the devices continue to sell exceptionally well. In Hong Kong, the iPhone 17 Pro sold out rapidly in stores, pushing customers toward online orders with wait times of up to three weeks.

Similar delays have been reported in other countries, including Australia, New Zealand, China, and Singapore. Demand is clearly high, but growing online criticism may dampen long-term enthusiasm.

Apple has not yet responded to the images circulating online. Whether adjustments will be made to the production process or official communications will be released remains anyone’s guess for now.
