Apple is reportedly working on integrating miniature cameras into its AirPods, with a potential launch planned for the end of 2027. These built-in sensors are not intended as traditional photography tools, but as visual input for Siri. By using Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology, the AI assistant will be able to interpret the user’s environment and offer real-time assistance, such as suggesting meals based on the ingredients the user is looking at. The news comes from well-known Apple insider Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
This project, known internally as B798, was originally intended for a 2026 launch. However, the timeline has been pushed back because the company is focusing on refining its computer vision models and overcoming software issues related to AI development.
Although the hardware is expected to mirror the design of the AirPods Pro, it will feature cameras in the stems and a visible light to alert users when data is being uploaded to the cloud.
These earbuds are part of a broader hardware ecosystem in which artificial intelligence is central. Apple is also exploring the development of smart glasses and a wearable camera pendant, both of which could come to market around the same time.
These innovations coincide with the expected arrival of a foldable iPhone in 2026 and a smartphone in honour of the 20th anniversary, featuring a wraparound glass design and an almost bezel-less screen.
The software enabling these experiences is already in development. During WWDC 2026, Apple introduced advanced Siri and Visual Intelligence features for iOS 27. While an extensive, AI-driven version of Siri is expected to enter beta testing later this year, the release of other Apple Intelligence tools is scheduled for this autumn.
