Peel is a universal remote control app that's branching out to home automation

11 March 2015

Imgur
For: iOS
Imgur’s second attempt at a mobile app is an iPhone-only affair that focuses on browsing the site’s image collection. Noticeably absent are any tools to upload images to the site, at least for now.
The new app doesn’t look like the original, which attempted to mimic the grid format of Imgur’s PC site – a format the dated Android app still holds to. Instead of a grid, you’ll see a single image and swipe from right to left to view more. To read the comments you have to scroll down underneath the picture.
When you first open the app, it presents you with the ‘most viral’ images, and there are categories for the latest user submissions and random images.
To go beyond browsing, double-tap on an image and a variety of action icons appear at the bottom of the screen for sharing images with other apps, up- or down-voting, and marking items as favourites. You’ll also see the option to download images.

Peel
For: iOS, Android
Peel is about to truly become the “smart universal remote” after announcing plans to add connected-home commands to its TV remote app.
The app can already control TVs, set-top boxes, game consoles, and other entertainment devices by either tapping the host device’s onboard infrared or – in the case of an iPhone or iPad – using Wi-Fi.
From next month, Peel will updated with a new feature that enables it to relay commands to thermostats, lighting, garage doors, security systems, smart plugs, air conditioners, blinds, locks over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and infrared.
To spare you the hassle of always having to deal with multiple devices separately, the expanded Peel app will allow for the creation of so-called ‘Peel-in’ presets for controlling multiple devices simultaneously.

Craftsy Classes
For: Android
Productivity apps are always popular but Craftsy goes further. Basically it gives the user access to over 500 tutorials in photography, jewellery making, knitting, sewing, and more. Classes aren’t free but the developers are open to taking suggestions for new features and you get on-on-one interaction with Craftsy’s panel of experts.
Be warned, this app is in beta, so it may be a little buggy.
