Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude chatbot, is reportedly considering an initial public offering that could be one of the largest ever. The Financial Times reported that Anthropic has hired law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, known for handling IPOs for major tech companies such as Google and LinkedIn, to guide it through the process.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that Anthropic is simultaneously seeking private financing that could value the company at more than $300 billion (€258 billion). That valuation included a combined $15 billion (€12.8 billion) commitment from Microsoft and Nvidia. Anthropic has reportedly discussed a potential IPO with leading investment banks, but those talks are said to be at a preliminary stage.

Th news puts Anthropic in a head-to-head race with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, which is also rumored to be preparing an IPO. The two potential listings would test investor appetite for loss-making AI startups amid fears of an AI bubble.

Recent developments at Anthropic, such as the hiring of former Airbnb executive Krishna Rao, who played a key role in Airbnb’s successful 2020 IPO, suggest that the focus is on preparing for a possible stock market listing. CNBC earlier reported that Anthropic had secured investments from Microsoft and Nvidia, valuing the company at around $350 billion dollars (€300 billion).

In pursuit of its ambition to overtake OpenAI in AI, Anthropic has expanded rapidly. The company announced a massive AI infrastructure build-out with data centres in Texas and New York and has tripled its international workforce. Investors are reportedly keen on a possible Anthropic IPO, seeing it as a chance for the company to pull ahead of OpenAI.
