Big Data can deliver huge business benefits but the trick is finding which tools to work with

The model, whether it is delivered by Dell, Exertis, IBM or EMC, doesn’t appear much different from channel models evolved to promulgate other technologies to market. On the subject of the market, Gartner recently published its Hype Cycle Special Report for 2014, which stated Big Data had shifted beyond the peak towards the trough of disillusionment. This was not necessarily bad news, however, because interest in Big Data was undiminished and the market had “settled into a reasonable set of approaches and the new technologies and practices are additive to existing solutions”.

In any case, Gartner also reported that analytics would become “an essential ingredient” as the Internet of Things and mobility drove more data into the enterprise. The need to use analytics from diverse data to improve decision making across the supply chain would also be a primary driver in bringing together the worlds of IT and operational technologies (OT in Gartner parlance). That would be good news for Big Data and analytics but not necessarily for lovers of a snappy acronym. ITOT anyone?
