According to Bloomberg, Apple has decided to discontinue development of a cheaper and lighter alternative to the Apple Vision Pro (pictured). The company wants to focus its attention on developing smart glasses that can compete with Meta’s AI glasses.

Apple is reportedly already working on a range of devices in addition to the (previously planned) lighter Vision Pro model. These include an M5 variant of the Vision Pro, planned for 2025, the second-generation Vision Pro, scheduled for the second half of 2028, the first-generation Apple Glasses, possibly as early as 2027 and two XT smart glasses, with production planned from 2028.

Meta is already working on a range of devices in addition to the (previously planned) lightweight Vision Pro.

Meta already sells more than 2 million smart glasses made in partnership with Luxottica, and recently introduced the Meta Ray-Ban Display, an AI glasses with screen functionality.

Apple is reportedly investing in eyewear that relies heavily on voice interaction and artificial intelligence, despite the challenges the company has recently faced in that area. The glasses will reportedly be equipped with a new chip, offered in different styles, and possibly come with health features.
