Dublin-based networking company, Xpert has appointed Basil Bailey to the position of CEO almost a year after the previous holder of the post, Dr Cormac McCarthy, departed the company.

Bailey, who has a degree in geology from Trinity College Dublin, has over 17 years’ experience in both the IT and telecommunications sector. Prior to joining Xpert, he was group marketing director with Horizon Technology.

He has also served as country manager of AST (Europe) Ireland, marketing manager of Wang Laboratories (Ireland) and with Nixdorf Computer AG. In the telecommunications area, Bailey held senior management positions at Worldcom (Ireland) and Esat Telecom, where he was general manager of the Small Business Division.

According to Bailey, the top post at Xpert has been vacant for around nine months. Dr Cormac McCarthy was appointed managing director in May 2002. Operations director, John Dolan had been filling in as interim chief executive until Bailey’s appointments a few weeks ago.

Bailey’s appointment coincides with Xpert’s acquisition of Genesis Telecommunications, a provider of technology to call and contact centres in the UK, but which also has customers in Ireland. The products and systems offered by Genesis include Avaya telephony platforms, Rockwell FirstPoint Contact Management System, Talisma’s Contact Centre and CRM suites, and the Blue Pumpkin Workforce Management Solutions.

‘The acquisition is strategically timed and meets market requirements for a one-stop shop with expertise and specialisation in data, voice, storage and all convergence challenges. It fits the group’s long-term strategy of both organic and acquisitive growth,’ said Bailey.

Bailey said that in terms of strategy, the company would continue to focus on its core areas, which include networking, storage and maintenance, and build on its strong relationship with partner HP. Xpert currently employs over 200 people in Dublin, London Glasgow, Watford, Warrington, Huddersfield and Thornaby. Xpert’s strategic partnerships include Cisco, HP, Avaya Communications, Mitel and BT.
