US gamers shunning expensive titles

According to figures from US research firm EEDAR the average cost of console games is declining.

Attributing the dip to changes in consumer buying patterns and competition between rival platforms, the report found the average cost of a title for either Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 had declined from $60 to $53. These figures remain in contrast to the market-leading Nintendo Wii, whose games are frequently priced below $50.

Another factor taken into account in determining the reasons for the decline in next generation console games is the changing gameplay styles of users in favour of casual and family-oriented games.

EEDAR warned the continuing reduction in console prices would have a knock-on effect on pricing as buyers look for accessible, medium-budget material, warning “if pricing begins to correlate more strongly with value, then publishers/developers need to be careful about the games they have in development.”
