Students at the University of Ulster can now access its online distance learning programme over a new data network that is capable of handling Internet telephony applications.

The University’s new network is based on Nortel Networks equipment that offers Quality of Service (QoS) features from the edge to the core. The product set in use includes Nortel Networks’ BayStack Ethernet switching, Passport multiservice switching and Optivity* network management. The implementation was carried out by the Belfast-based reseller FastActive Networks.

The infrastructure forms part of a three-year project to build a reliable network capable of handling voice, video and data. It allows students to take advantage of the distance learning initiative, dubbed ‘CampusOne’. It includes teaching and education materials, online postgraduate programmes, professional development and continuing development courses.

Since its launch last October, more than 3,500 students from all over the world have signed up to this ‘virtual’ programme. They can now access videoconferencing, streamed lectures and video on demand.

This reduces travel time and allows for increased collaboration. It also eliminates the need for dedicated, inter-campus video circuits, which the University estimates will result in savings of close to €90,000 per year.
