Twitter app gets you paid

For anyone who has been questioning the need and relevance of Twitter, the microblogging service is beginning to truly show its potential.

A new application has emerged that will ask subscribers to pay to receive feeds. Super Chirp, a product of developers 83 Degrees, lets users set the price of their individual tweets, from anywhere between $0.99 (€0.77c) and $9.99 (€7.24) a month. The company then takes 30% of the profit.

A similar app, Twitpub, has already been around for a while, but this required users to set up an alternative Twitter account. Instead, Super Chirp utilises the existing direct message feature so a user can continue to post free public content as well.

Unlike other forms of online blogging payment such as Google Ads, which is driven by readers but paid for by agencies, readers pay for Super Chirp. The 140 characters must be worth the price, so the practicality of a premium account for the average user whose free tweets don’t garner many subscribers is questionable.

Those with loyal followers, mostly celebrities and news networks, are the most likely to get subscribers with Super Chirp, but in making some of their content private they risk losing the readership of those who appreciate the free peak into fame.
