Toshiba has announced another addition to the army of Android tablets. Named simply Toshiba Tablet, this slate PC will feature a 10.1″ touchscreen capable of displaying 720p HD video on its 1280×800 display.

It is designed to run Google Android 3.0 on an nVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor. With this as-yet-unreleased version of Android sanctioned by Google for use on tablets, it will allow connection to the Google Market to install new apps. This contrasts with its ill-fated predecessor, the Toshiba Folio 100.

The Toshiba Tablet should include two USB 2.0 ports, regular-sized and mini types, as well as an SD card slot. Like most recently announced tablets, there are cameras front and back, in this case at 2 and 5 megapixel resolution respectively.

Wireless comes in the shape of 802.11n, although there’s no word on whether that’s full MIMO support, or the pared-down version seen in smartphones and netbooks.

The brief specification released also doesn’t list Bluetooth, but there is an option for a 3G mobile broadband module.

The Toshiba Tablet is a 10.1″ tablet PC

Toshiba has included its Resolution+ technology which tries to make standard-definition video look more attractive on an HD screen through up-scaling. It also adds Adaptive Display technology, where the webcam sense ambient light levels and adjusts screen brightness to suit.

The black plastic backplate is said to be eye-catching because it has a textured pattern. If that fails to impress, ‘a choice of stylish colours’ is available for this removable battery cover.

Only one innovation is mentioned, the ability to optimise audio output to suit the surroundings.

No release date is given other than ‘first half of 2011′, although it is expected to be more expensive than the relaunched Folio 100.

The Toshiba Folio 100 is also said to be back in production after its abortive launch late last year. This Android 2.2-equipped tablet was withdrawn from sale by its exclusive retailer DSG Group, which includes Dixons and PC World, after the overwhelming number of complaints and returns of the 7″ Google tablet.

The Toshiba Folio 100 is now expected to be available in March 2011, with a revised version of the Adobe Flash plug-in, one of the causes of customer complaints.

Once again the Folio 100 will feature older Android 2.2 and bar access to the Android Market. Toshiba has also said there will be no provision to upgrade to a tablet operating system when it becomes available.
