GPS device manufacturer TomTom has launched the world’s first Traffic Foundation. The move comes six months after the company released a manifesto for reducing global traffic congestion, which, it claims, will bring together key stakeholders from academia, industry and policy-making.

Giles Margerison, director, UK and Ireland, TomTom Business Solutions, said: "The impacts of congestion on businesses are manifold, from increasing journey times, mileage and fuel costs to reducing productivity."

The not-for-profit Foundation will fund two PhDs and two post-Doctorate research projects annually into traffic management and knowledge technology. The research topics for 2012 will be engineering models for traffic management; vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-server communication; and the physics of transport and traffic

Next year will also see TomTom fund work related to EC Directive 2010/40/EU covering the seamless deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems across the EU, part of which includes providing a consistent standard of traffic and travel information.
