As technology has become intertwined irrevocably with every aspect of modern business, those that embrace and best leverage it will differentiate themselves and become more successful, says a 2013 report.

According to the Accenture Technology Vision 2013 report, this proposition signals a large transformational shift not just in the role of technology, but also in the very business models that underpin success.

There is a higher order of thinking-a digital mindset-that will separate tomorrow’s most able organisations from their lesser rivals," says the report. "At the very least, it is necessary in order to anticipate and respond to ongoing technology-driven disruptions. Ideally, a digital mindset will enable enterprises to launch pre-emptive strikes of their own."

The report contains seven major technology trends that will impact businesses in the near future.

The first is that relationships with consumers are changing, as are the scale of relationships with businesses. Through social media in particular, businesses can now have potentially millions of people with whom they must communicate effectively, almost irrespective of the size of the business.

Big Data and analytics now mean that deep insights into how businesses and interactions work can be achieved in real time and this kind of information can inform and guide business models and strategies, if they are agile enough to take advantage. This, the report calls matching the speed of decision to the speed of action.

The report says that collaboration must be designed into business process to allow workers to work adaptively and effectively in the new environments.

Software defined networking, which the report refers to as "virtualisation’s last mile", will be key to ensuring that the leaps forward in server technology through virtualisation can be carried out to every section of the network, making for intelligent infrastructure.

All of these developments of course, require protection and the report says that this must be an active defence, not relying on perimeters or point defences but on intelligent active systems.

Finally, the report says that cloud computing must not be thought of anymore as an emerging technology but rather one that has matured to be a standard. Hybrid cloud then is a way for businesses to integrate their existing infrastructure with public resources.

"Cloud," says the report, "is the foundation of emerging opportunity."

But as with any forward looking report, the current reality is a little different. In Ireland, few companies could be said to be at the cutting edge of these developments and many of those who have embarked on such digital strategies tend to do so in focused areas.

That is why ComputerScope, in association with Accenture, want to know how your organisation is coping with the world going digital.

In a new survey, we want your insights as to how your organisation is going digital and why.

With a chance to win in iPad, the results will be the basis of a feature in the July/August issue of ComputerScope, with a comprehensive picture of Ireland’s new digital landscape.
