Westendorf and Soll are two of the most popular destinations in Austria for Irish Ski fanatics. The villages are part of the Skivelt lift area that boasts 279km of ski runs, 91 cable cars and ski lifts and over 70 refreshment stops for you to sit back and refuel. One of the stand-out aspects of this beautiful area is the number of brand new, state of the art, high speed ski lifts with heated seats, but this is only the engineering technology on the surface. In the background tech is used for everything from making snow to helping the skiers to find their way home.

Irishman Lenny Carroll, who runs the Bergviewhaus Appartments in the picturesque village of Sol, praises the Skiwelt lift company’s use of technology in a range of decision making processes. A fifteen year veteran of the Austrian ski scene, Carroll had the confidence to borrow and build for his apartment business. Most of his customers come through the web, and the lift company that carries those same customers up the mountains uses their lift pass information to gauge where best to build the next new lift system. Since he arrived there in 1996 technology has increasingly become part of the area’s competitive edge.

The SkiWelt boasts a state of the art mobile web portal. It also offers a very slick App for the iPhone. All the latest information from the SkiWelt is sent directly to the iPhone, including slope status, lifts, snow reports, weather, opening times, huts and events. By means of GPS skiers can see their exact location and the nearest runs, lifts or huts are always in sight with just two taps, iPhone users also have direct access to SkiWelts live webcams. A fully interactive map is very useful.

A brand new attraction this year is a range of five photo points on some of the most beautiful mountain peaks in the area. At these points visitors can take their own photos as a memento of a great days skiing, then access them straight away on the SkiWelt Gallery and send them to friends and relations as e-cards.

For those who want to know just how well they did, there is also the “Skiline” lift pass analysis service. Daily and multi-day evaluations are displayed on Google Earth and also on the interactive SkiWelt trail map. Users enter their lift-pass number at www.skiwelt.at/skiline to receive a personal analysis of their day on the mountain. Registered users also receive an overall evaluation of all their ski days.

Ski Trips to Westendorf, Soll and the Skiwelt area are avaialble from Irleand through Topflight
