24 February 2016

The IT professional of the year award is presented to the IT professional – individual or team – which has proved that technology in business is more than just an operational expense, but one that can deliver competitive advantages. Outstanding IT professionals drive businesses to deliver more innovative and cost-effective solutions.

The group at the Irish Defence Forces had an important lynchpin in the form of Commandant Barry Byrne. The Communications Information Services (CIS) corps headquartered in Defence Force HQ is responsible for all matters relating to information and communications technology across 9,500 employees both on Island and abroad.

In a substantial upgrade project, the Defence Forces implemented an information and knowledge management system based on Sharepoint. Known as IKON, it has improved internal communication, increased productivity and enhanced decision making. Apart from all that and more the savings in year one came to €800,000.
