New data from independent Web analytics firm StatCounter has found that global tablet Internet usage was just 4.8% in November. This compared to a total of 19.1% for mobile, while desktop usage accounted for 76.1% of traffic.

The company’s research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, also reported that Apple’s iPad is the clear leader in terms of tablet internet usage.

In Ireland, tablet Internet usage on 8.4% is ahead of the global average. However, like the rest of the world, tablet usage is still considerably less than desktop (75.4%) and mobile (15.8%).

“Samsung is in a distant second place in global terms, although a challenge to the Cupertino company’s lead cannot be ruled out given Samsung’s success in the smartphone arena,” said Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter (pictured).

StatCounter found that worldwide the iPad range accounted for 74.5% of total tablet Internet usage. Samsung has increased its share from 8.0% in November last year to 10.85%.

“The perception is that tablets are proliferating and replacing traditional PC and laptop machines so we developed our research platform to isolate tablet usage stats,” said Cullen. “In reality we found that tablet internet usage globally at less than 5% is still relatively small compared to desktop and mobile.”
